New capacity

With an efficiency of 62%, the new CCGT facilities being built at the Tavazzano and Montanaso (LO) and Ostiglia (MN) power plants will have a key role in the EP Produzione decarbonization process

Fiume Santo Energy Park

Towards
2050

the development of an emissions reduction pathway in line with EPH’s 2050 ‘net-zero’ vision

Hydrogen

Roadmap to 2050

In line with the path taken by the parent company EPH, in 2023, EP Produzione conducted a preliminary analysis to identify a realistic emission reduction pathway looking ahead to 2050. The path envisages a gradual phase-out from coal, in line with the PNIEC 2023 scenarios for coal-fired power plants in Sardinia, and the progressive reliance on more efficient gas-fired combined cycle power plants that will constitute a crucial step in the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, contributing to the progressive reduction of emissions by 2040. The mix of natural gas and hydrogen can offer a further carbon reduction, where the pace of hydrogen largely depends on its commercial availability on the European market.

Batteries

In order to level out the intermittency of renewable energy production and promote its utilization, without wasting any overproduction, particularly at certain central times of the day, it is necessary to integrate it with systems for storing electricity, such as hydroelectric reservoirs and batteries

In line with the objectives of the National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate (PNIEC), which envisions the development of at least 6 GW of new centralized storage systems, EP Produzione is promoting 5 projects based on this new technology:

  • Fiume Santo Large BESS comprises modules with a capacity of 100 MW x 2 hours, totaling 200 MWh of energy storage and delivery
  • Fiume Santo Small BESS: this second installation at Fiume Santo consists of modules with a total capacity of approximately 10 MW for 8 hours, providing a total capacity of 80 MWh
  • Centro Energia Ferrara: with capacity of 70 MW for up to 4 hours (280 MWh)
  • Trapani BESS: with capacity of 100 MW x 4 hours (400 MWh)
  • KR (Crotone) BESS: with capacity of 9.9 MW x 8h (79.2 MWh)
